The small step down, as seen in the image, is a single rise down and serves as a transition deck to and from the home creating a large uninterrupted floor space for the upper level deck. Problems such as table and grill placement near a step become less of an issue when more floor space is available.

The offset and slight inset from the front staircase directs foot traffic to and from the home and yard with a minimal amount of discomfort to seated guests.
